It’s September 12th, 7:00 a.m., and I’m preparing to take the stage in Salt Lake City. I’ve been hired for a marketing keynote (through my speakers bureau, Big Speak) for the NACVA (National Association of Certified Valuators) Annual Super Conference.

I’m in the back of the room listening to some of the organization leaders discuss the challenges faced by members as the world around them expands its boundaries once again. AI pushes the envelope, providing data-rich intonation in real time to businesses asking, “What’s my business worth?”.

In my keynote, I will discuss how to leverage AI optimization and create connective and disruptive messaging. I will also show examples of how digital marketing can lead them to the promised land. However, at this moment, I realize they are closer to Shangri-La than they realize.

The Value of the Valuator is Not in Revealing Value, It’s in Creating It.

Professional valuators are a cheat code for business growth.

The fact that they know how to determine a company’s proper value is incidental. The true value of a valuator is their detailed knowledge of the myriad items that decrease a company’s value. Valuators are the keepers of the “If onlys.” They know all the things businesses do and don’t do that drive down value and, adversely, what can be done (with enough time) to increase value.

I’ve always believed that if you run a company as if you’re going to sell it tomorrow, even if you never do, you’ll run a great and profitable business. Now, I’m sure of it. So much so, I think every professional valuator should offer “valuation consulting” to assist companies in increasing their value either over time or in perpetuity, and help businesses to avoid value sucking pitfalls and identify areas to maximize value.

I had a great time as the conference keynote speaker. I met some great people and had thought-provoking marketing discussions. NACVA is an extraordinary organization that will continue to guide professional valuators in increasing their value and the value of those they serve.
